Welcome to the enchanting world of Nova Luna board game, a game designed by Uwe Rosenberg and Corné van Moorsel. In this game, you’ll embark on a journey under the new moon, where strategic tile placement and clever time management are your keys to victory. Nova Luna is perfect for players who enjoy thinking strategically and planning their moves carefully.

Nova Luna Game Overview

The game revolves around a beautiful central Moon Wheel, from which you’ll select colorful tiles to place on your personal board. Each tile presents unique tasks that you need to complete by arranging other tiles around it in specific patterns. As you complete these tasks, you’ll mark your progress with wooden disks, racing against your friends to be the first to achieve a set number of completed tasks. The game is suitable for up to 4 players, but it can also be played in solo mode.

Theme

Nova Luna’s theme revolves around lunar cycles and celestial planning. The central Moon Wheel symbolizes the phases of the moon, guiding players as they navigate through their strategic decisions. The game’s artwork and components reflect this theme beautifully, creating an immersive experience that feels both serene and challenging.

Nova Luna Gameplay

Nova Luna board game is played over several rounds until one player completes a set number of tasks. The gameplay revolves around selecting and placing tiles while managing your position on the Moon Track. It is an easy to learn abstract game which is different from Uwe’s usual Tetris style games . Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how this gateway game begins and progresses:

Turn Order

The player whose marker is furthest back on the Moon Track takes their turn. If markers are stacked, the player on top goes first. This mechanism ensures that players who choose high-cost tiles will have fewer turns, adding an interesting layer of strategy to the game.

Tile Selection

nova luna components

First locate the lunar meeple token. Then you can move it clockwise up to three spaces and get the tile where the meeple token lands on.

Important Points

  • Any tiles you take must be placed immediately. You cannot take a tile to place it later or not at all.
  • Every turn, you must select a tile. Skipping a tile selection is not allowed.

After selecting a tile, players move their marker forward on the Time Track by a number of spaces equal to the time cost indicated on the tile.

Filling the Selection Track

If at the beginning of your turn there are only one or two tiles left on the selection track, you may fill all empty spaces with randomly drawn tiles. Draw these tiles from the draw piles and place them face up on the selection track. Always fill the space closest to the Meeple first continuing on in clockwise order!

Advancing Tokens on the Moon Track

Whenever you take a tile, move your token on the Moon Track forward by as many spaces as indicated by the number on the tile. Always move your token in a clockwise direction. If you reach an occupied space, place your token on top of any other player tokens already there.

Remember: It is always the turn of the player whose token is furthest back on the Moon Track. If several players share this backmost space, it is the turn of the player whose token is on top.

Placing Tokens on Your Tiles

When you complete a task by surrounding a tile with adjacent tiles of matching colors, cover that task with a token from your personal supply. Each tile can have up to three tasks, and you can place as many tokens on it as there are tasks. The required tiles don’t have to be directly adjacent if they are in the same color group. However, at least one of those tiles has to be adjacent to the required task.

Important Points

  • Each tile can be used for any task as long as neighborhood rules are followed (see examples 4 and 8 in your rulebook). Therefore, it doesn’t matter if tasks are no longer recognizable once covered by tokens.

Nova Luna Strategy

Strategic depth in Nova Luna comes from balancing immediate needs with long-term planning:

  • Tile Selection: Choosing tiles that not only fit current objectives but also set up future moves is crucial.
  • Time Management: Efficiently managing your position on the Moon Track can allow for multiple turns in succession, giving you more control over tile selection.
  • Task Completion: Prioritizing tasks that are easier to complete can lead to quicker progress, but sometimes investing in more complex tasks can provide better long-term benefits.

Personal Opinion and Rating of Nova Luna

During our playtest session, we gathered our regular gaming group for an evening dedicated to Nova Luna. We were immediately drawn to its elegant design and straightforward rules. As we started playing, it became clear that while easy to learn, mastering Nova Luna board game required careful thought and foresight.

In one memorable moment, Tom found himself several spaces behind on the Moon Track after selecting a low-cost tile early on. This allowed him to take multiple turns consecutively later in the game, strategically placing tiles that completed several tasks at once. Sarah focused on high-cost tiles, maintaining a steady pace but struggled with fewer consecutive turns towards the endgame.

Our group found that communication was minimal during gameplay as everyone was deeply engrossed in planning their moves. The competitive yet serene atmosphere created by Nova Luna’s mechanics was truly unique.

Conclusion

Nova Luna stands out as an abstract strategy game that offers a perfect balance between accessibility and depth. Its unique time management mechanic adds an intriguing layer of strategy to traditional tile placement games. Whether you’re playing with family or experienced gamers, Nova Luna board game promises an engaging experience under its lunar theme.

For those seeking a game that challenges your strategic thinking while providing a visually appealing and thematic experience, Nova Luna is certainly worth adding to your collection.
